This device is for control in flight simulation games and in the aerospace industry.
We invented a new type of sidestick. Unlike all others, where the handle is located at a considerable distance from the axis of rotation and the user's hand does not have contact with the fixed support, with our device the user's hand has constant tactile contact with the fixed base. This difference allows the user, for example, an airplane pilot, to have better control over the airplane, expressed in the full coordination of the movements of his hand, in which the handle of our device is located. Unlike the usual sidestick, where the pilot is unable to fix the position of the hand due to the lack of contact with the fixed base, he is forced to constantly move the control handle to feel the boundaries of possible backlashes. With our device, the pilot can lock his hand in the right position and, if necessary, smoothly move the handle without fear of making a mistake. This is especially true during takeoffs or landings of the aircraft in difficult conditions or in zero gravity when performing spacecraft maneuvers in manual mode.
Such an opportunity appeared after we decided to install inside a fixed base on which the user's hand slides, a sphere that is rigidly connected to the handle with a special bracket. In addition, inside the fixed base, we installed an optical sensor, which, as in the R-handle Controller, reads from the sphere information about the movement of the handle, which is held by the pilot or gamer. To provide feedback to the pilot’s hands with the aircraft’s control systems, the mechanism also is located below.
Existing analogues are now widely used in the aerospace industry for aircraft control, for example: Airbus, Lockheed Martin (F-22, F-35), Gulfstream 700, Bombardier CS300, Cirrus Aircraft (Cirrus Vision SF50), MS-21 (Russia) and various vehicles, in those places where remote control of various mechanisms is required, including in space.
Recently, a trend has begun to replace the side wheel with sidesticks and many aircraft manufacturers are already installing sidesticks on their planes. But I did not find evidence that Boeing installed them on their aircraft. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they believe that modern sidesticks are not a good enough solution for controlling an airplane. Also, currently there is a rapid development of the market for manned quadrocopters, which no doubt will really need a more reliable element of the control system. In addition, there is a huge market for private planes and helicopters and our sidestick is also useful to them. And of course, the most widespread use of our sidestick (joystick) is the market for computer games of flight simulators. Also, this device is very well suited for remote control of drones, ground-based construction vehicles, underwater equipment, as well as for controlling various machines and mechanisms in space. In addition, we are confident that this device will significantly improve and speed up the pilot training process and increase the safety of air travel.
